The most meaningful gifts you can give this holiday season are your time and expertise through pro bono work. Discover the opportunity that fits your skills and interests best below:
Make the holiday season brighter for our service members with AILA’s Military Assistance Program (MAP). Cases include common family-based immigration matters, such as fiancé visas, adjustment of status applications, and naturalization applications, and volunteer attorneys can assist cases remotely
As Afghans transition from military installations to communities throughout the United States, they are in great need of immigration assistance. Consider the following in-person and remote opportunities and find out how you can help bring these individuals peace of mind in the new year:
Human Rights First Project Afghan Legal Assistance (PALA) – This volunteer opportunity is for law firms, lawyers, and law school clinics who can potentially provide legal representation or other legal assistance on a range of immigration-related matters, which may include asylum, SIVs, humanitarian parole requests, P1/2 refugee status, TPS, consular processing, employment-based visas, and family reunification.
Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service(LIRS) – LIRS is calling for volunteers throughout the United States to support incoming Afghan Allies, Special Immigrant Visa holders, who are being evacuated to the United States.
HIAS Pro Se Plus Asylum Project – HIAS provides legal services to asylum seekers, asylees, and others who are seeking humanitarian relief. Our pro bono opportunities range from full representation of an asylum seeker before the asylum office or immigration court to more short-term and discrete projects, like conducting country conditions research for an asylum case or assisting a refugee or asylee with their adjustment of status application. HIAS plans to launch a pro se plus project in January to assist Afghans. Pro bono attorneys receive ongoing support from HIAS in the form of mentoring and access to a library of resources.
Assisting Medically Vulnerable Afghans in Maryland – Sign up to provide legal orientations for Afghans staying in a hotel near Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda. The legal orientations are being held Mondays and Fridays from 9:00 to 10:00 am (ET) and focus on resettlement and possible immigration law options. If you can help once, twice, or more, please email Lance Conklin at lance@conklinimmigration.com. An outline and scripted information for the presentation will be provided. Interpreters will also be provided.
